Thursday, April 23, 2015 – Bonus Day

Each participating Choral Program will have the option of designating up to 2 “Subsidiary Ensembles” for adjudicated performances of their prepared music during the final day of the COA Nationals. Following each performance, COA Nationals Adjudicators will give detailed, on-stage performance reviews.

Friday, April 24, 2015

Each participating Choral Program’s Primary Ensemble will benefit from an adjudicated performance of their prepared music. After each performance, COA Nationals Adjudicators will provide performance reviews. After performance reviews and following an Observational Requirement, participating choirs will go with one of the COA Master Clinicians (Jo-Michael Scheibe, Suzi Digby, Eugene Rogers) for a full one-hour clinic.

The day will also feature workshops for ALL participants. Scheduled workshops include Premiere! A Massed Choir Event led by Dan Forrest, XChange – A Meeting of Voices, and Vocal Master Classes with Andrew Lunsford (aka, “The Accidental Tenor”). Each workshop will run for an hour to an hour and a half and will repeat throughout the day… so, when students and directors aren’t warming up or performing, they will have plenty of time to attend.

All Participants will enjoy the following COA Workshops:

  • Premiere! A Massed Choir Event: “Premiere! A Massed Choir Event” is a COA original. Our Premiere! program gives you the opportunity to work directly with a world-class composer. During the event, participating choirs will discuss the creative process, and “unpack” the lyrics / poetry integral to the song, the music and everything else that went into the newly commissioned piece. Then, in massed choir format, the participating choirs will rehearse the piece with our Premiere! Composer, followed by a Tutti Finale Performance as part of the final Massed Choir Concert in Carnegie Hall. We are pleased to announce that COA’s Premiere! Composer for the 2015 COA Nationals for Mixed Choirs will be Dan Forrest.
  • Vocal Master Class with Andrew Lunsford: Choirs of America proudly presents a special vocal master class with Andrew Lunsford (aka, “The Accidental Tenor”) at the 2015 COA Nationals. Mr. Lunsford will discuss vocal technique, performance practice, interpretation, stage presence, and much, much, more. This is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the performers and observers to learn from a master voice coach and from a diverse group of student performers.
  • XChange – A Meeting of Voices: Each Participating Choir will have the opportunity to attend a School Exchange with at least one other Participating Choir from a different region. Moderated by Choirs of America Faculty, each Choir will sing for the other, then have the chance to discuss “best practices,” compare notes and generate new ideas… all while making some new friends.

Saturday, April 25, 2015 – Concert Day

Today, the COA National’s Master Conductor, Z. Randall Stroope, takes over for a fun and educational Massed Choir Rehearsal, followed by an awe inspiring Prism Concert at the world-famous Stern Auditorium, Carnegie Hall. During the Concert, choral programs with 45 or more singers will also have a “Spotlight Performance Opportunity”… and ALL participants will enjoy a Massed Choir Performance… complete with a Tutti Finale from Dan Forrest. It will be spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime event!

Finally, we end the program with an optional late night Dessert ‘n Dance Cruise on the Hudson… a fantastic way to meet up with other Choral Programs from throughout the country!

Without a doubt, being able to conduct my Choir on the Carnegie Hall stage and have these wonderfully talented students perform Homeland by Z. Randall Stroope was the pinnacle of my music education, teaching, and directing career.
