Christopher Olin, Artistic Director
Christopher Olin serves as Artistic Director of Choirs of America, designing and implementing the educational and artistic components of the Choirs of America programs. Olin also serves as instructor of choral music education at the University of Oregon where he teaches courses on vocal pedagogy, choral conducting, choral materials, and choral methods. Olin also oversees choral teacher licensure, choral music education graduate study, and assists in the coaching of graduate conductors; further, he serves as the conductor of the University Women’s Choir and University Singers. Graduates of the University of Oregon choral music education licensure program at the University of Oregon have enjoyed unprecedented success and are all currently employed as choral directors across the country. He earned his M.M. in Choral Conducting from the University of Oregon, and a B.M.E. from the University of Nevada, Reno.
Before joining the faculty at the University of Oregon, Olin served as the director of choral studies at Miramonte High School (MHS) in Orinda, California where he conducted six choral ensembles and served as chairman of the visual and performing arts. Under his direction, MHS received critical acclaim at home and abroad, consistently receiving the California Music Educators Association’s highest ranking of Unanimous Superior and winning choral competitions in Boston, New York, and Chicago. Olin also introduced a strong tradition of international touring, conducting concert tours in Italy, Spain, and Greece. In 2003, the MHS choruses gave an invitational performance at St. Peter’s Basilica for Pope John Paul II, receiving His Excellency’s praise as “ambassadors of world peace.” They also were guest performers with the Montserrat Boy’s Choir and served as the U.S. representatives at the 2005 Kiffisia International Choral Festival. The MHS choirs actively commissioned new works for chorus, premiering works by several popular American composers. During his tenure, the MHS choruses recorded two compact discs, including the most recent Deep River featuring Olin’s original choral arrangements.
Olin has served as the assistant conductor of the Eugene Symphony Chorus and the Reno Philharmonic Chorus, preparing the choirs for a multitude of choral-orchestral performances with Ron Daniels, Barry Jekowsky, and Giancarlo Guerrero. He is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education.
